Did you violate any patents last April 15? Say hello to tax patents…
Tax strategy patents are on the rise – if you thought software patents were absurd, wait until you (or your accountant) get dinged for violating these. It would be hard to prove infringement, but I suspect Microsoft will eventually find a way to use tax strategy patents to FUD Intuit or wipe out the few users tied to GnuCash (ok, maybe that’s going to far). Actually, this one has little to do with software patents and more to do with patents on how to avoid being hit with a large tax bill at the end of the year. No, I’m seriously not lying.
As is custom, I was about to toss my wife’s Journal of Accountancy into the trash when something I saw made me reach out and grab it back mid-air (btw, my wife never reads them – her firm gets electronic versions emailed to them). The part that caught my eye was an article on “Tax Patents” which I thought was a curious title. How can someone patent taxes was my initial question – then I realized they must mean tax-avoidance patents and that sounded intriguing.
You may find this intriguing too – the article is available online. I’m not sure how we got here, but I think it’s absurd that Joe Taxpayer could be infringing patents by using a “Process for evaluating the financial consequences of converting a standard form IRA to the Roth form IRA”. Yes, that’s a real patent (Patent no. 6,058,376). Even better was the patent on a “Method for Financing Future Needs” – yes, that one too is real (Patent no. 7,149,712).
Anyway, if you’re interested, you can read about it all here.

Steven Vaughan-Nichols “Bad, Bad Reasons Not to Buy Open Source Software”
I actually seem to have missed the slide show SVN is apparently tearing apart, but can’t say I disagree with him on these points. If the slideshow really claimed the points he’s reacting to, whoever wrote the slideshow should be fired for pulling a DiDio crime-scene-reporter-turned-tech-industry-expert-fraud.

Opinion: When I first saw the list for the eWEEK slide show, Ten Reasons Not to Buy Open Source, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. So here are my answers to these “reasons.”
Without further adieu, here are my answers to the “reasons” not to buy open-source software.

NYC news… new lows?
The NBC NYC news channel just put a description of two suspects who held up a 100 year old woman… this is the suspect description on the tv graphic as the newsperson read it for the viewer:
- One: black shirt, black pants
- One: white shirt, black pants
- Call: [800 number]
Are you kidding me? In all of NYC, citizens are susposed to look for these two criminals based on this description? And taking this a quarter step further… they don’t think the suspects have perhaps changed clothes??

One Channel9 moderator’s views on Linux… funny…
I’m not sure what the “offenders” posted, but I found the general anti-Linux mindset in this funny. The odd part is the first post appears to only be a quote from Jerry at OIN…
Emet, DarthVista and any other trolls that decide to propagate on channel9. Consider this your only warning. Quit posting ridiculous threads on Channel 9. no one cares about your little revolution, establishment, whatever your holier than thou mind thinks it is. I will troll your threads so badly, it will probably be funny. Im personally tired of it and I am tired of you guys posting your little rantings as to keep the crap on the front page. You are deteriorating the value of this site and the experience that can be had in this forum. This is a Microsoft site. If we want Linux news we can go to Newsforge, Slashdot, etc. etc.
I guess if you want Linux news, don’t go to Channel9 – and if you visit Channel9, you can’t be interested in discussing Linux – did you notice that he didn’t say go to Port25???

Microsoft funds a study to attack the GPLv3 drafting process… whaaa???
What’s the point of attacking the GPLv3 drafting process – and spending shareholder $’s on it? How can Microsoft justify to its shareholders this is a valuable use of people and resources? The drafting process??? Customers of Microsoft care because…..? What possible use and credibility could this report have… needless to say even I’m baffled by this extravagant waste of corporate resources… why not just buy golden shower curtains?

Windows Vista = Windows Me II? Starting to see a few comparisons…
One thing open source and Linux have done is offered customers choice – and with choice comes certain levels of personal power to make demands. It seems customers are speaking. The Inquirer calls Windows Vista something different, Windows Me II [twilight zone music starts here]. Yes, that’s right, the mother of all operating system slanders, Windows Me II. The article makes two valid points that you should really read.
Now for The Inquirer to make such a bold statement is not quite uncommon. But when Microsoft Watch from eWeek picks it up and seems to agree… now you’ve got trouble.

Linux users… Microsoft understands you… want to talk?
Had to laugh a few times at this – can’t tell you how many IMs I got on it… It reminds of those weird driver’s ed videos I had to watch. “Tommy is in general reckless and resistant to authority. Tommy drives to fast and ends up killing 2 deer. Tommy then goes home and uses Linux. If you identify a Tommy, approach with great confidence that you can use this white paper, show him to GetTheFacts.com and use this case study and he’ll be more receptive to switching everything he knows/loves that’s Linux over to Windows. Help Tommy realize the errors in his ways with Microsoft Windows, Groove, Live, and OneCare.”
