Spamalot?
What’s with the sudden surge in Wordpress comment spam this week? If I didn’t have Akismet, I’d probably turn commenting/trackbacks/etc completely off.

Might want to try out WP hashcash. Uses javascript challenges that browsers handle but bots don’t. I ran it for a few weeks marking spam but still queueing it for akismet. Then after I was satisfied it wasn’t producing false positives I let i just delete spam ignoring the akismet queue.

Interesting – I had not heard of hashcash but have seen similar challenges. I asctually don’t have a problem with the spam – Akismet works great. I was just noticing a flood of spam attempts over the last week.
