OOXML: “Dead Format Walking”

Jason Brooks’ title sums it all up succinctly.

Since most Office users would be happy to continue using Microsoft’s old binary formats, and since those for whom open standards are important would probably prefer ODF or PDF formats anyhow, I won’t be surprised if OOXML quietly dies before that future Office iteration ever sees the light of day.

Interesting thought. Even if it doesn’t see the light of day, it certainly has been quite a distraction - whether due to ineptitude when dealing with a real standards body (Microsoft’s other office “standards” are mainly de facto) or malice (assuming many won’t bother to read a 6,000+ page spec), or anything in between, the end result is much the same: the community is having to spend otherwise worthwhile effort fighting battles that it shouldn’t need to.

We’ll see what happens …in any case I’m not too optimistic about OOXML, although I wish I had reason to be.
