Work is definitely being done to port Solaris to System Z: http://blogs.sun.com/marchamilton/entry/solaris_on_ibm_system_z and while it's Sine Nomine doing the porting, IBM is clearly happy to promote it: http://searchdatacenter.techtarget.com/generic/0,295582,sid80_gci1284280,00.html

That's not what your salespeople are telling my employer - should I send my PO's elsewhere? I thought you guys are OEM'ing Solaris, and supporting it on your mainframes. Might want to get that straight, Michael, now I'm seriously confused - and PO's are going on hold.

??? I think you're seriously misinformed "watching IBM embrace it"??? The only open source kernel IBM has embraced is the Linux kernel (IBM is #3 in code contributions).

The greatest asset Linux has is the group - all the different ideas pouring in. Just look at x86 virtualization and all the options available today vs say 2 yrs ago. KVM for instance - very innovative solution, only in Linux...

Perhaps it is just me, but I am very excited to see Sun innovating in a competing kernel, and watching IBM embrace it. The groupthink surrounding Linux is one of its biggest failings.
